Tea or ‘cha’ as we Bongs call it has a special place in our culture. Originally introduced to India by the British Raj, as they wanted to make in roads into the booming Chinese tea trade by bringing saplings from China since 1788. Later when saplings were discovered in Assam in 1824, everything changed. Tea has made a long journey from a prized brew in the hands of a privileged few to being a common man’s beverage.Tea drinking habits and preferences are as varied as India itself. Some like it with milk and some without, some have it with sugar & some with honey. Some also like to have it with spices like cardamom, cloves & ginger. No matter what our preferences are, this holy concoction has surely made a place for itself in every bengali heart. A must have accompaniment to every bengali ‘Adda’, our humble tea has helped brew many debates and discussions over its steaming cup. For Bongs tea is not just a drink, its a remedy for headaches, fatigue, boredom and lot more. So, what are you waiting for….go have your own steaming cup of ‘cha’.
Fleeing nostalgic my dear friend.
