REKKA – – A detailed discussion

REKKA is the acronym for “Rabindranath Ekhane Kokhono Khete Ashenni” the new Bengali thriller web series from Srijit Mukherjee thats making waves. The name is curious to say the least and I did watch it. But this is not a review, I would like to call it a discussion because the actual story is much more than the web series. REKKA is based on bengali thriller novel from Bangladeshi writer Mohammad Nazim Uddin. I watched the series and felt that it left a lot unanswered, so I had to get myself a copy of the novel & gobble on it to finally quench my inquisition. Basic plot goes something like this—An investigator finds out that atleast 5 poeple have gone missing after visiting a restaurant at the tranquil border town of Sundarpur. The name of the restaurant is ” Rabindranath ekhane kokhono khete Asenni” which simply translates to Rabindranath never came here to dine. The food of the restaurant is delicious bordering on intoxicating which draws people from afar. The lady owning the restaurant Muskan Zuberi is mysterious and enigmatic. She is also influencial and has local administration and police as her aid. She lives in a big mansion belonging to her late husband Rashid Zuberi. In the course of investigation the protagonist is helped by a local police informer Ator Ali. At the climax investigator unravels the mystery of disappering men and their link with Muskan. Srijit Mukherjee changed the name of Investigator and few other characters from the actual novel. The name of the protagonist in Novel is Noor e Safa but in the web series his name is Nirupam Chanda. The web series speaks very less about how Muskan’s late husband Rashid Zuberi inherited huge property from Alok nath Bose who happens to be Rashid’s Grandfather. Alok nath’s only daughter married a muslim boy and this enraged Alok nath and he severed all ties with her. But when Rashid was born, Alok nath’s heart melted and he had his daughter and son in law live with him. After death of Alok nath he left most of his property for Rashid. A dying Rashid found love in doctor Muskan while he was in hospital and married her. The reason for naming the restaurant on Rabindranath is also inacurate in web series. As per novel Alok nath Bose was contemporary of Rabindranath Tagore and invited him to lunch but he never made it because Rabindranath lost his youngest daughter at that time. Srijit suggested that Muskan may have heared this story from Rashid and named the restaurant based on it. But Muskan confessed in the novel that on the eve of opening the restaurant she prepared a feast for Rabindranath Tagore being his ardent fan and summoned him via planchet but he did not come, this was reason why Muskan name the restaurant as REKKA. The most intruiging part is the climax which reveals that Muskan ate the corpes of her victims and also fed them to her customers at restaurant. She developed a liking for human flesh while she survived a plane crash feeding on corpses of co passengers in Andes mountain in her teens. There was actually a plane crash at Andes mountain in 1972, an Uruguayan plane crashed with its rughby team. Only 16 survived in that incident out of 45, who were rescued after 2 months of the crash. Survivers of the incident retorted to cannibalism for survival. Mohammad Nazim Uddin borrowed this part of novel from actual incidents of Andes crash in 1972. Nevertheless this is a mind blowing thriller and deserves all the accolades. My only advice is that one should read the novel before watching the series. This will help in getting a complete understanding.
