The much anticipated follow up to the Indian mythological thriller series Asur is finally here.First season of the web series which aired back in 2020 received a lot of accolades, but the next installment took more than 3 years. Is it really worth the wait? Let’s find out. The story still follows the progression of a boy who identifies himself as an Asur destined to dawn in the end of kaliyug. In his attempt he kills innocent people to showcase the helplessness of the society at large and absence of divinity. In this season he continues his grand plan, of course with the help his brain washed disciples and power of technology. The boy somehow manages to flee from jail and turns into a technology wizard (with no proper schooling). He builds an AI that can predict human behaviour and almost enables him to see future which allows him to stay a step ahead of the government officials trying to track him down. The writing is good and pacy but doesn’t bother to provide a rational explanation to how a small boy becomes so resourceful to be able to control so many lives and kill at will. But the series does address the real threat to privacy in today’s digital world and how tech giants are stealing private data to feed AI systems for their own selfish needs. Amusingly the series made a complete mockery of the security in crypto currency as one female official is shown to trace the source by breaking the blockchain in less than 5 mins. Also, introduction of Mayank Chang was unnecessary for me. Moreover, the AI super computer looks like cheaper Indian version of that in Hollywood film Eagle Eye. I feel that in a rush to attain closure a lot of the details has been missed. The makers would have been better off had they decided to leave some things to mystery, in their attempt to explain everything I feel that they have faltered and looked clumsy. The great plus for me is mythological annotations and references made in the series which makes it standout from the rest. Overall a good attempt but I really feel that the audiences waiting for three years deserved better.
